These are the finished posters for the Museum of Trees brief set by the Roses Awards. I was so happy with the way this brief turned out, it’s not even funny. I think it’s one of the very few pieces of work I’m proud to call my own.

‘When the Wind Blows’ was the first Second Semester project we received this year. It look me a long time to wrap my head around depicting something invisible in a way that was both culturally relevant and also tasteful, but eventually I came up with this solution for the ‘Kamikaza’ or the sickle wind of Japan.
Bit annoyed with myself really. I handed all of my work in this morning and managed to print out the one with a small imperfection right by the definition of the sickle wind…

My friend works for a large train company and asked me if I wanted to help and design a logo for the Pride thing they had in London in July so I said I’d give it a go. It’s based on the designs on the side of the Northern Rail trains you see all over the place ‘Up North’. I didn’t particularly like the text that I had to go with it but I think it resembles the design enough to suggest the connection between Northern and Pride.

All-In-All I’m not so happy with it but I didn’t realise he’d put all his eggs in one basket with me because he made it sound like he had someone else working on something for him but it turned out he hadn’t and now he doesn’t like it and I feel so guilty about it.

My monogram from first year. It only took me like 500 years to make it fit in the portrait box and show the whole monogram without cutting half of it off… you like?

The things you find at home (Taken with instagram)

Not exactly an ‘art’ post but I found my old Polaroid camera when mother decided she didn’t want me to have a room at home any more[that isn’t ENTIRELY true. My brother is 18 and needs his own space but I like to think she doesn’t want me there any more]. It takes Polaroid 600 film though which is so expensive I could cry!

Upgrade! Cards now edge-painted. (Taken with Instagram at Aled Lewis Studio)

I love edge-painted business cards, they just add that something extra to your design. (yes I am a weirdo)

I love how playful-yet-polished they look, and I’m in love with that shade of blue.

So fricking awesome.

Not really to do with my brief but this would be AMAZING as part of my ‘Museum of Trees’

So since I’ve had my blog I’ve not actually posted anything of mine. I’ve decided to rectify that today whilst I’m in the library sorting my life out, design-wise at least. This is my logo from beginning to where I am right now for the Tree-Hugger brief[design the launch campaign for a Museum of Trees] and I’d love to know what you think?

A Panicked Plea

I used to love Graphic Design. I had so much passion right through into college and then I was excited to start university and do the thing that I love before going into the industry but there’s a massive problem: I seem to hate my subject now. I find myself sitting there and contemplating things that have absolutely nothing to do with my degree subject. I have no motivation or drive to do any of the work that would enable me to pass my degree and I think I’ve developed a psycho-somatic illness when it comes to going into university on studio days because I wake up with a splitting headache, or stomach cramps or throwing up. Something that will stop me attending class and thus the cycle repeats…

I still love design, and I will still always look at things and admire them for their design but when it comes to actually creating something myself I always feel like it’s no good and then redo until it comes to deadline and I’m back to the bare bones of a concept again. I’ve done this with my 1st semester work this year and even though my tutor keeps asking me to see it I can’t bring myself to show him work that I think is God-awful and lacking in any design at all.

I really want to be in love with Graphic Design again because working in the industry has been a dream of mine for so long but I really need a massive dose of inspiration to even pass second year.

I need to make a deal with myself to try and be inspired as much as possible for the next week, and then the next week and so on. Taking things slow seems to be the way to go but hopefully I’ll manage it in the end. If I don’t then God save my soul because I’ll be a second year drop-out with nothing to show for it but a load of shitty portfolio pieces and an ingrained hatred for the design industry.

Have any of you ever gotten to a point where you feel like you don’t want to carry on?

This cracked me up. I found it on one of my friends’ facebooks and it’s from somebody called AlphaDesigner. The world according to Germans…

I love ampersands, they’re my favourite characters because their shapes vary so much from font to font
